Sproutt Review

Each of us wants to live a long, healthy life with those that we love. For many people and their families, that means eating right, exercising, and getting enough sleep, in order for us to be there and to provide for our spouse and children.

No matter how healthy you are, part of caring for our loved ones also means planning for the worst-case scenarios. That’s the reason so many of us purchase life insurance policies. Just in case.

Companies like Sproutt were designed to protect exactly these types of proactive planners. Sproutt not only helps connect you with competitive life insurance coverage options, but also rewards policyholders who take charge of their own health and lifestyle choices.

So, what are Sproutt’s policies, and how does this online insurance broker both celebrate and reward your healthy lifestyle?

What is Sproutt?

A fairly newer name in the life insurance world, Sproutt was founded in 2018. In the short time since its launch, Connecticut-based Sproutt has managed to successfully combine AI with personal health insights to help consumers find exactly what they need when it comes to new life insurance coverage.

When people are healthier, they tend to live longer with a better quality of life. This, of course, is not only an advantage for them, but it’s also ideal for life insurance companies. That’s why Sproutt has set out to identify and reward those who make healthy lifestyle choices, through the use of a Quality of Life (QL) Index.

The QL index uses the customer’s lifestyle choices information as data which then Sproutt can run against hundreds of different policy options offered by their partner insurance companies. This includes companies like Prudential, John Hancock, Penn Mutual, Mass Mutual, Nationwide, and many others. Keep in mind, though Sproutt’s service is offered in all 50 states, not all life insurance products will be available in each of the states or to all customers.

Sproutt Quality of Life (QL) Index

To help you shop for your life insurance coverage, Sproutt uses what they call a Quality of Life (QL) Index mentioned above. This questionnaire asks many of the usual life insurance questions: your age, height and weight, marital status, and whether you use alcohol, tobacco, or recreational drugs.

The QL Index takes the questions a bit further to get a more in-depth idea of your health and lifestyle. That means asking you things such as:

  • How many fruits and vegetables you eat in a day
  • How much sleep you get each night
  • Whether you ever feel stressed, depressed, or hopeless
  • How many people you feel you can truly confide in
  • How often you exercise
  • What you do to de-stress
  • Whether you eat fast or processed food, and how often

Sproutt also wants to know how knowledgeable you are with certain health topics. For instance, they asked me whether I knew what a circadian rhythm was and which stage of sleep includes dreams.

Once you’ve answered all of Sproutt’s QL Index questions, you’ll be given your personalized results. This tells you, on a scale of 1 to 5, where you ranked in the categories of movement, nutrition, sleep, lifestyle, and wellbeing.

If you want to learn more about each category, what it means for your life insurance coverage, and what you can do to improve your results, you can enter your email address and you’ll receive your personalized results through an email from Sproutt highlighting your strengths and areas you may consider improving.

Depending on your results, the QL Index may qualify you for life insurance coverage without the need for a medical exam. To know for sure, you’ll need to check your eligibility after receiving your QL Index score.

Coverage Options

You can purchase a variety of life insurance policies through Sproutt and the platform’s partner companies. Sproutt makes it easy to shop for coverage online, whether you are interested in term life, whole life, universal life, and even a guaranteed approval policy.

Term Life

Buying term life insurance can be an easy, affordable way to protect those that you love for a specific period of time. Whether you’re looking for term life insurance coverage to provide security until your children are adults, your spouse retires, or the mortgage on the family home is paid off, term policies are worth a look.

Each of Sproutt’s partners offers their own mixture of coverage options and pricing, so the actual insurance products included in your search will vary. You can shop around for a policy on this platform, however, if you:

  • Are between the ages of 18 and 80
  • Want a term of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, or 30 years
  • Need between $50,000 and $4,000,000 in coverage

The prices you’ll be offered will depend on factors such as your age, health, occupation/hobbies, family (health?) history, and even the results from your QL Index questionnaire. The exact requirements of your policy will depend on the insurer, and specific life insurance product, you eventually choose.

Whole Life

Whole life insurance offers permanent protection for your loved ones, albeit with a price tag that’s almost always notably higher than with term coverage. However, if you’re looking for a product that sticks with you for life — and offers you coverage with no medical exam — whole life coverage might be the answer.

Through Sproutt, you can begin applying for whole life coverage from the platform’s many partner companies. You can complete the QL Index questionnaire and submit your application. Please keep in mind - you will not be able to see results from your search or purchase your coverage online.

Currently, only term life insurance can be purchased through Sproutt’s online platform. You’ll need to call and speak with one of their representatives in order to get pricing information, choose your preferred policy, or move forward with buying coverage.

As with term life insurance, Sproutt is able to offer between $50,000 and $4,000,000 in whole life insurance through the company’s many partner insurers.

Available Riders

It’s hard to know which riders will be available to you, as each insurer offers their own products and features. However, between all of Sproutt’s insurance partners, you can expect to find a mixture of the following riders:

  • Disability waiver
  • Waiver of premium
  • Child rider
  • Convertibility rider
  • Accelerated death benefit
  • and more

How to Apply

Sproutt makes it pretty simple to apply for term life insurance coverage online.

You’ll be asked some basic application questions, including your name, age, height and weight, gender, marital status, and medical history. Between your application and QL Index, you’ll also be asked things like your:

  • Sleep habits
  • Exercise habits
  • Nutrition and eating habits
  • Emotional health
  • Tobacco and alcohol use
  • Knowledge of general health facts

Depending on the results, you may be offered a quote for various term coverage options or you may be referred to Sproutt’s phone agents to complete the process.

If you are immediately offered online quotes following your questionnaire, you’ll be able to choose the one that suits you best or customize your coverage options to build what you need. You can then apply for coverage through that insurer directly; in order to continue, Sproutt may need to ask you a few more questions on that insurer’s behalf.

It’s important to note that many insurance companies will have an agent call you to verify or request more information. This is at the discretion of the insurer writing your policy, not Sproutt, and is a pretty standard part of the process.

Sproutt Reviews and Ratings

Sproutt has been an accredited company with the Better Business Bureau since 2019, and currently has an A- rating.

Additionally, Sproutt has a 4.8 rating out of 5 stars on Trustpilot with more than 200 consumer reviews. Many of the sentiments shared by reviewers included the ease and speed with which Sproutt helped them gain life insurance coverage.

Pros and Cons of Sproutt

Pros:

  • The online shopping process is simple: Sproutt makes it simple to purchase term life insurance coverage entirely online. From start to finish, their platform’s application process is easy to complete and straightforward, connecting consumers with affordable coverage that meets their needs.
  • Agents are available by phone: Not all online insurance brokers are available to answer your questions or walk you through the application process. Sproutt agents, however, are available by email anytime or you can call them M-F from 9am to 7pm EST.
  • Range of coverage options to choose from: Term coverage is available for 5-30 years with limits as low as $50,000 and as high as $4,000,000.
  • Many big-name insurers are included: Since Sproutt is a broker, they can connect you with policies from well-known and trusted companies such as AIG, Prudential, John Hancock, Mass Mutual, and more.
  • Available across the country: Sproutt is licensed to operate in all 50 states.

Cons:

  • Whole life quotes are not online yet: If you’re interested in purchasing a whole, universal, or guaranteed acceptance life insurance policy through Sproutt, know that you’ll need to apply and purchase coverage with an agent directly. As of now, only term life coverage is available for online quotes.
  • Your lifestyle can impact you negatively: Sproutt prides itself on rewarding those who make good lifestyle choices. If your lifestyle choices aren’t quite as healthy, though, you might find them impacting your life insurance quotes more so than with other brokers. Sproutt asks questions that some platforms do not, which have the potential to affect your rates and offers.

Final Thoughts

There are many great reasons to buy life insurance coverage, and even more policies to choose from in the process. Sifting through them all can be time-consuming, though, so brokers like Sproutt make it easy to get many results all at once.

Sproutt takes it a step further with their proprietary QL Index, which gauges your physical health and analyzes your lifestyle. Based on these results, Sproutt is better able to offer you the policy options you need at a competitive price, sometimes even without a medical exam.

Making good health and lifestyle choices isn’t just a smart decision… you could also find yourself rewarded when shopping around for coverage through a platform like Sproutt!

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Sproutt provide life insurance policies?

Sproutt is an insurance broker, meaning that it helps you search for coverage with a number of providers at once. While the platform can help analyze your policy eligibility and connect you with the right coverage, Sproutt doesn’t actually write any of the life insurance policies.

Can Sproutt offer discounts on coverage?

Sproutt can help you find the most affordable life insurance coverage that fits your needs, by getting quotes from multiple different issuers at once. However, discounts are not an option when shopping through Sproutt (or any other broker) — life insurance is regulated at the state level, so the policy you choose will cost the same regardless of who you buy it through.

Is Sproutt’s life insurance buying process entirely online?

You can quickly and easily shop around for term life insurance policies and browse coverage options online. However, you may need to speak with an agent in order to confirm your information and finalize the policy you chose. This is a pretty standard practice among insurers, so it’s not just a Sproutt thing.

If you are hoping to buy whole life, final expense, or guaranteed acceptance coverage, this is not yet available on Sproutt’s online platform. You’ll need to call and speak with one of their agents in order to get policy quotes and move forward with buying.

Is a medical exam required with Sproutt?

Whether or not you’ll need to undergo a medical exam in order to finalize your life insurance coverage depends on a few factors.

Sproutt will take into consideration the results from your QL Index questionnaire, then recommend policies that match your health and personal factors. However, certain insurance companies may still require a medical exam based on your age, family history, or even the amount of coverage you’re hoping to buy.

If you want to avoid this altogether, you can request a quote for a no-medical-exam policy. This might mean buying a guaranteed acceptance policy or even a whole life insurance product.
