Pumpkin screen shot

Pumpkin Pet Insurance was founded in April 2020 during the Coronavirus pandemic when more people were adopting and buying dogs and cats while under lockdowns. Pumpkin Pet Insurance saw a need to add a reliable, no nonsense pet policy to the market that wasn’t confusing and didn’t have as many restrictions as a lot of the other pet insurance policies.

Pumpkin pet insurance

Pumpkin Pet Insurance is a reimbursement pet insurance plan that covers many of the common accidents and illnesses that dogs and cats face. It prides itself on not having sneaky add-on fees or breed or age restrictions.

Pumpkin pros and cons

The pros of Pumpkin Pet Insurance include:

  • Fur parents get up to a 90% reimbursement for covered vet bills
  • Doesn’t have breed or age restrictions
  • No six-month waiting period for coverage to begin

The cons of Pumpkin Pet Insurance include:

  • New company without a long history of success
  • Does not cover exotic pets

Pumpkin pet insurance plans

Pumpkin Pet Insurance offers an accident and illness plan as well as a preventative medicine package. It offers coverage for dogs and cats with any licensed veterinarian in the United States.

What Pumpkin pet insurance covers

Pumpkin Pet Insurance covers many common accidents and illnesses, including:

  • Eye, ear, and skin infections
  • Digestive issues
  • Urinary infections
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Cancer and growths
  • Broken bones
  • Swallowed objects
  • Bite wounds

It also covers diagnostic tests and advanced care such as:

  • Radiology and diagnostic tests
  • Prescription meds
  • Emergency hospitalization
  • Alternative therapies
  • Surgery
  • Specialized care
  • Cancer treatments

Plans also cover things that other plans don’t cover such as:

  • Hereditary conditions
  • Dental and gum disease
  • Behavioral issues
  • Sick visit exam fees
  • Microchip implantation
  • Prescription food for eligible conditions

What's not covered

Pumpkin pet insurance doesn’t cover pre-existing conditions. Once a condition is cured and the 14-day waiting period is complete, recurring conditions are covered. Some other things that Pumpkin Pet Insurance doesn’t cover include:

  • Breeding costs
  • Spaying/neutering
  • Cosmetic and elective procedures
  • Non-illness related dental cleanings

Pumpkin coverage options

Pumpkin Pet Insurance coverage options allow you to tailor the plan to meet your needs. All plans come with a 80% or 90% reimbursement rate. From there, you can choose the annual limit to be $5,000, $10,000, $20,000, or unlimited. You can also choose an annual deductible of $100, $250, and $500. The wellness plan that covers preventative care is also optional.

Restrictions and waiting periods

There is a 14-day waiting period before illness protection is usable. The same waiting period applies to accidents. If your pet has a pre-existing condition, it must be cured for at least 180 days before you can get coverage for it. The only restriction is on knee and hind leg ligament conditions.

Discounts

Pumpkin Pet Insurance offers a 10% discount on “second” pet plans. If you have more than one pet that needs coverage, you get 10% off of their plan to help alleviate the expenses of having multiple plans.

Consumer experience

Pumpkin Pet Insurance has a 4.5-star rating on Trustpilot, with 84% of those offering reviews giving the company a 5-star rating. Consumers seem to have a positive experience with the claims team and are generally happy with the service that allows them to get care for their beloved pets.

Complaints revolved around denied claims. One complaint, in particular, said that a prescription food was denied when it was previously covered under another carrier. The consumer had little confidence in future claims revolving around the cancer status of his pet.

Pumpkin vs. competitors

Pumpkin vs. Lemonade

Both Pumpkin and Lemonade offer accident and illness pet plans with optional wellness plans. There are some key differences between the two carriers. Pumpkin Pet Insurance covers dental illnesses and behavioral issues, while Lemonade doesn’t. Pumpkin Pet Insurance also covers preventable conditions that pet owners were advised on; Lemonade plans have restrictions. Lemonade won’t cover recurring conditions (things that occur twice within 18 months), whereas Pumpkin plans do. Pumpkin will also cover most pet prescription food, whereas Lemonade doesn’t. There are no extra charges with Pumpkin for exam fees or physical therapy costs. Lemonade has an upper age limit based on breed, whereas Pumpkin has no age restrictions.

Pumpkin vs. Spot

Pumpkin and Spot are two pet insurance carriers that offer accident and illness plans. Where Pumpkin has a 80% or 90% reimbursement rate, Spot has three options ranging from 70% to 80% to 90%. Pumpkin has a $5,000, $10,000, $20,000, and unlimited annual benefit limit for dogs ($5,000, $7,000 and $15,000 for cats), whereas Spot has options including $2,500, $4,000, $5,000, $7,000, $10,000, or unlimited. Neither cover boarding nor breeding services. Both cover behavioral issues, end of life expenses, and hereditary conditions.
