In the highly competitive travel insurance space, it takes a lot to make a big entrance and create disruptive change. Battleface was able to do just that: After only five years, the company developed a modular travel insurance plan offering several benefits that can be added to their core product, based on what travelers need most.

Does Battleface offer the right combination of benefits for your next trip? In this Battleface travel insurance review, we’ll go over what this company offers, how to buy it, and the pros and cons of packing this plan for your next trip.

What is Battleface?

One of the newer entrants to the travel insurance space, Battleface was founded in 2018 with the goal of making travel insurance a fully customizable product. Instead of offering a suite of different products designed for different types of adventures, Battleface offers two different plans directly to the public with a multitude of options. Battleface is based in Columbus, Ohio, calling themselves a “full-stack global company” focused on building a digital-first experience for the next generation of travel insurance buyers – including offering a space tourism package for those who want to go to the final frontier.

Their innovation goes beyond modular travel insurance, but to their partners as well. In January 2023, the company announced the launch of Robin Assist, a technology product which enables partners to handle multilingual customer support, claims handling, and emergency case management. This option ensures travelers covered by a Battleface policy can access their benefits, regardless of where they buy it.

Battleface Travel Insurance Options

There are two types of travel insurance options offered by Battleface, depending on where you shop for your insurance. If you look for a Battleface plan on a travel insurance marketplace, such as Squaremouth or AHT Insurance, you can select from several pre-packaged plans which include many of the standard insurance options: Trip Cancellation, Trip Interruption, Trip Delay, and Baggage Loss and Delay. For travelers who are unsure of what kind of trip insurance is right for their next flight, these plans offer a good balance of value and benefits.

For those who are a little more experienced, or know exactly which coverages they want in a travel insurance plan, the company offers a more bespoke experience through their website. Travelers can select from either a single-trip or multi-trip plan, put in their travel dates, age, destination, and trip cost to fully customize a travel insurance plan.

What’s Covered Under a Typical Battleface Plan

Because Battleface is a full-stack travel insurance option, anyone can use their system to completely customize a plan based on what they want. Like other options, this gives travelers the option to not only control the price they pay for their travel insurance, but also select the benefits they might use and nothing they won’t need. The Battleface core plan includes Trip Cancellation, Trip Interruption, and Trip Delay Benefits.

  • Trip Cancellation: With Battleface’s Trip Cancellation benefits, travelers are covered for up to 100% of their prepaid, non-refundable costs if they need to cancel for one of the covered reasons, which may include the death of a loved one or a qualifying emergency at home. If the traveler is forced to pay additional single occupancy costs because of a companion’s covered cancellation or interruption, the plan will also cover up to 100% of the additional trip cost.
  • Trip Interruption: Even when we’re on vacation, emergencies can happen at home. Battleface’s Trip Interruption benefit covers up to 150% of prepaid and non-refundable trip costs if you have to return home for an emergency, including illness, injury, or death.
  • Trip Delay: All it takes is one mechanical issue on your flight or network meltdown to add hundreds of dollars to your trip. Battleface’s Trip Delay benefits provide up to $200 per day or $2,500 per trip for covered incidental costs, including meals, local ground transportation, or hotel accommodations.

Are There Additional Coverage Options?

Battleface prides itself for offering numerous additional coverage options, which can be added or subtracted from the core product. The options range from traditional Cancel for Any Reason, to special coverages for rental cars or vacation rentals.

  • Cancel for Any Reason: Just as the name suggests, Cancel for Any Reason allows you to decide against your trip and recover some of your costs. Battleface’s version of this benefit will cover 75% of nonrefundable trip costs (50% in Florida) if you cancel at least 48 hours before your trip.
  • Baggage Package: The Battleface Baggage Package includes up to $2,500 of coverage for lost, stolen, or damaged luggage, which includes personal items and sports equipment. If your bags are delayed, this coverage also includes coverage of $100 per day, or $500 per trip, to purchase incidental replacements.
  • Travel Medical Package: This package adds on up to $100,000 in coverage for a medical emergency while abroad, and up to $500,000 for emergency medical transportation. Certain limits apply for New Hampshire residents, while Indiana residents must purchase the Travel Medical Package as part of their Battleface plan.
  • Pet Travel Package: This Battleface add-on offers up to $2,000 of coverage for veterinary care if your pet gets sick or injured while abroad. If you need to return your pet because of a covered trip interruption, this benefit may also cover up to $500 of coverage.
  • Rental Vehicle Damage: Road accidents can happen anywhere in the world. If you are renting a car abroad, the Battlefield Rental Vehicle Damage benefit will cover up to $35,000 in damages beyond your control for one vehicle, including a collision, vandalism, or certain natural disasters.
  • Accidental Death & Dismemberment: Battleface offers additional accidental death and dismemberment coverage up to $500,000 in the event of an accident resulting in losing eyesight, hearing, a limb, or death.
  • Vacation Rental Damage: If you are staying in a vacation rental from Airbnb, VRBO, or other platforms, Battleface’s Vacation Rental Damage add-on may help cover damages to personal property at the residence. Coverage is available for up to $1,500, $3,000, or $5,000 per reservation.

Pre-existing condition waivers, hazardous activity waivers, and Cancel for Work Reasons benefits are not available under Battleface’s insurance plans.

How to Buy Battleface Travel Insurance

There are several ways to get Battleface travel insurance, based on where you are shopping. If you are using an online travel insurance marketplace, you will select the best plan for your needs and follow their prompts online.

If you are purchasing a multi-trip annual travel insurance plan directly from Battleface, you will be prompted to start with some basic information, such as the residence and date of birth for all travelers to be covered, and the start date. From there, you will be presented with their annual plan with the option to choose a trip cancellation coverage limit of $1,500, $3,000, and $5,000. From there, you will be directed to checkout.

For single trip coverage, you will need to provide more information up front. To customize a travel insurance plan, you will be asked for your country and state of residence, the age of the applicants, the total trip cost, travel dates, and where you are going. With this information, Battleface will present you with all of your travel insurance options. Once you have selected the benefits that are most relevant to your trip, you can begin the checkout process.

The checkout process will require you to provide personally identifiable information, including your name, address, phone number, e-mail address, and your first trip payment date. You will also be asked to name a beneficiary for accidental death and dismemberment. Once complete, you will be able to pay for your policy. Battleface accepts Mastercard, Visa, Discover, and American Express, secured through payment provider Stripe.
